Oh. My. Fucking. God.

Hi Jodie, I take it you've finished it?
To save you from yourself, and any inadvertant blurts, I'm going to ask you some nice easy questions.
1. How do you feel right now? Was/is that the same emotion you felt immediately after you finished or has it changed?
2. Were you surprised at the end?
3. Did the turn of events disappoint you or excite you (that doesn't seem quite the right word) or create some other emotion entirely?
Remember, we must not mention you know what. Right... go
P.S. Did it ever make you cry?

Please save me because I'm going to die.
1: Had many mood changes since I read the end. When I first read it obviously it took a while to trust the twist, when I did I was (I've written about fifty words in here now and deleted them all because they weren't right so leave it at speechless), utterly incapable of finishing a sentence with anyone without adding the two words that I’m sure you can guess like I was on a loop, no one knew what I was talking about. Then as I read on, frustrated (not once, hardly more than a few hints, blink and you'll miss them), then suspenseful anxiety for three, understanding that I wouldn't be half as antsy if I'd got what I wanted (so am prepared to be suspended in this evil limbo, what more of a state could you ask a reader to be in when waiting for a the next instalment).
2: Unbelievably surprised, I never expected it in a million years. Not for one second, and I thought I could have more or less guessed anything that was coming in Danny. Beyond shocked, bolt upright, refusal to believe my eyes shocked.
3: Not in any world could that have disappointed me, as I've said frustrated for a second, yes, (along with annoyingly childish impatience for he next instalment, seriously I'll parade the streets with a sandwich board if it means I get Danny 3 a day sooner) but disappointed never. The odds are better stacked on me growing six extra legs and referring to myself as incy wincy than of Danny 2 having disappointing me. I loved it, worth the wait and more. More please, much much more.
As for the P.S. yes. And It's not Gwyneth Paltrow speaking here, it takes a lot believe me. Danny 1 made me cry once (the final visit to Jerrett's), Danny 2 had me in perpetual heartbreak, you could feel Danny's heart bleeding on the page, along with XXX's and XXX's. (I'm rhyming now). Danny's dead the whole way through, the only life left in him is fake, it's like reading about a huge ball of grief wandering into people's lives but still a more compelling ball of grief than any character in other books. And I'm sure you can guess what the end did to me.
P.S. Admiration, four years no slip.
If when anyone else has finished the book they are dying to talk about it (as I am) click on C Stones Danny, the only thing that will be shown on the home page will be a huge spoiler warning, only click on comments if you have read The Revenant, on pain of death, because believe me you'll be killing yourself at spoiling the shock ending.

That's great, Jodie, as rewarding a response as I could possibly wish for. You, too, have made (a still not so very) old woman very happy - thank you.
The Vol 3 excerpt is not up on the secret site yet. I'm not hurrying because I don't want anyone sneaking a peek. But it will be up shortly - then you'll be able to get at least a little taster.
P.S. Had to edit out your reference to those no-longer-with-us from Vol1 (and spoil your rhyme scheme - really sorry) because new readers are reading this blog all the time (particularly just now as we have a lot of press publicity out) and they're not all up to par with it.
If you ever have to talk about any of them just call them XXX, and try not to use the past tense or 'D' words. I know it's hard, as Vol2 is all about loss, but if new readers don't know what he's lost we're heads up.
I apologise for banging on about this (my P.S. is longer than my comment). It's just years of training on keeping my eye on the big picture - oh, and lying, of course. See? That's what secret-keeping will do to you.

Me again - just thought of something else I'd like to ask you, Jodie.
Did you feel any different towards any of the characters in this book? In particular, did you think Danny was a different man? And how about Conley, or Stephen - changed, or just older and wiser?
Hey, and here's a clincher, if you can answer it without giving anything away (keep it so vague it will be meaningless to anyone but me) - think Danny will change in volume 3?
Actually, scratch that last one - pretty sure you can't (that's generic 'you', not you personally) talk about it without giving a hint. Which is why I'm going to try, I like proving myself wrong:-
"I think Volume 3 will be one big recipe for disaster and I don't believe leopards change their spots - but then I'm a cynic."
Ah, supreme master of vague... and misleading - is there nothing I can't do?

finished it a couple of days ago (but have been traveling) and finally I can say: OMG, seconded. Usually I don't expect the same greatness from any sequel, but DANNY 2 certainly didn't disappoint. A gluttonous 790 pages and I'm even more ravenous for the third volume.
But I don't want to give any spoilers away. where should we gush, Jodie?

Glad you liked it Jen.
Don't think Jodie's been about for a few days, but no doubt she'll show in due course.
I know she's itching to talk about it too. I'm sure she said she was going to set up a page for it on her site?

Hello internets gone down once again, seriously you wouldn't believe me if I told you the trouble I have with computers, I only have to touch one to make it explode, it's a wonder I can write this.
I always forget that people may not have read book one, I promise to remember but excitement takes it toll.
Ah to the questions. My opinions changed for most of the characters and back again, just like first time round. I'm not going too far into it because I'm going to do a feature length essay on this when I get started. However Rab had changed, I think he lost his attractiveness, everything that he had to take on made him different, and for some reason he started to creep me out (he seemed like the old man for no reason I can pin down). I liked Stephen most of the way through until the end when he did that thing on the boxes (vague) because I thought it was dispicable and that he got more and more annoying. I really liked Conley in this out of everyone who I thought had changed, he really did seem older and wiser.
I didn't really think Danny was a different man I think he was just hollow, not really there anymore, he just seemed to be carrying on as he had done before so that no one would notice, or hardly anyone cared to notice he was gone, like he was sleep walking through his life because he had nothing to fight for anymore, nothing had meaning.
As you can read it really did tare my heart up, I love it when something really makes you feel and this really did, so much so that when the end came you really felt it.
As for the last question, that is dangerous, I am setting up a new page in which to discuss it because I really need to know what people think will happen. I am literally writing this two minutes before I go away for two days so the page will be up and ready as soon as I get back, (I haven't even time for spell check so apologies). I don't know what's going to happen, I am both excited and anxious in equal measure, I'll just say I don't think anything will every run completely smoothly for anyone in Danny no matter how much we want it to.
(I've read the Skull Island blurb by the way, and it's got me very worried)

Hello back again.
Just wanted to ask before I do anything on livejournal. Is it ok to talk about everything as long as on the page everyone can see there is just a large spoiler warning? Or shall I still be vague?
Posted by: Jodie | Friday, 21 December 2007
Hi Jodie, best thing to do is an LJ cut which actually hides the damaging portion of your entry - i.e. you say, "Here is my genius essay on DANNY vol 2" then the cut goes in.
You can find how to do a cut under FAQ's (Journal entries heading) or here is a link to take you straight there.
http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=75
They are easier to do than they look and are easy once you get the hang of them.
If you don't want to use that you could put an enormous SPOILER WARNING!!! in large type, telling people the nature of the spoilers i.e. "If you haven't read Vol1 DO NOT READ THIS OR YOUR CHILDREN WILL DIE." After that, they're on their own.
Lastly, and maybe easiest, you could do what we were doing at the party. Post your entry up saying, "I'm now going to talk about DANNY 2. To avoid spoilers I have entered this as a comment on this entry. To read it just click on the comment tag below, but you shouldn't read this if you haven't read vol1..." etc, etc, and then write and post your brilliant analysis as a commnet on the entry.
This has the advantage than no-one inadvertantly sees it. They have to open the comments up, and if they do that then on their own head be it.
Basically, if you warn people in big bold type and, for preference, then 'hide' the spoiler part somehow so they have to open it, then you've done all you can. After that you are entitled to be as open as you like in your discussions. It's your site and it's what it's for.
Have fun.
